Carrier-imposed surcharges on award flights, by program
Carrier-imposed surcharges are why the cash on a business-class award swings so much between programs. In the October 2026 study, LifeMiles had the lowest quoted cash, a median of at least $58 one way, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club the highest, at least $777. Most figures are minimums; only Thai Royal Orchid Plus ($127), where it quotes one, gives the full amount, and British Airways Club quoted none.

What are carrier-imposed surcharges on award tickets?
They are charges an airline or its program adds on top of government taxes and airport fees, often still called fuel surcharges. Taxes depend on where you fly from and to; surcharges depend on who flies the plane and which program sells the seat. That is how two programs can price the same business seat at similar miles and very different cash.
The study cannot split a total into taxes and surcharges, because programs quote one figure. What it can show is the total each program asked, below, across all routes of the October 2026 study.

How much cash does each program add to a business award?
- LifeMiles: at least $58 median cash, on 144 routes.
- Atmos Rewards: at least $76 median cash, on 448 routes.
- Thai Royal Orchid Plus: $127 median cash, on 26 routes.
- Air France-KLM Flying Blue: at least $490 median cash, on 343 routes.
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: at least $777 median cash, on 46 routes.
- British Airways Club: not quoted, so it cannot be ranked.
Each figure is the median over routes of the cash on each date's cheapest seat, for one adult, one way, across all 715 routes.
Why are most of these figures a floor?
So the list is an order of floors, except for Thai Royal Orchid Plus, which quoted none on 14 of its 103 routes. A program with a low floor can still add more at checkout. When a figure reads "at least", treat it as the smallest amount you could pay, not the likely one.
Does the direction change the taxes on award flights?
| Program | The Americas to Europe | Europe to the Americas |
|---|---|---|
| Atmos Rewards | at least $34 | at least $414 |
| Air France-KLM Flying Blue | at least $359 | at least $788 |
| LifeMiles | at least $58 | at least $93 |
| British Airways Club | not quoted | not quoted |
| Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | at least $692 | at least $953 |
Yes. For all 4 programs quoting cash both ways, the cash was higher leaving Europe than flying to it. Departure taxes explain part of that: the UK's Air Passenger Duty, for example, is charged on passengers leaving the UK and is higher in premium cabins. The Americas here are the whole world region, Canada and Latin American gateways included. Where a program quotes no figure in one direction, the cell says so.

Can you book award flights without fuel surcharges?
Close to it, with some programs. LifeMiles (at least $58) and Atmos Rewards (at least $76) had median cash under $100 across all routes. Flying from the Americas to Europe, the lowest median was at least $34, with Atmos Rewards. Low cash usually comes with a catch on dates, so check the program you want had seats when you need them; business class to Europe with miles shows both, program by program.
Is the lowest cash the best deal overall?
Not on its own. LifeMiles had a median of 72,000 miles and at least $58 in cash, but a seat on 17% of dates. Air France-KLM Flying Blue had a seat on 85% of dates with at least $490 in cash. Miles and dollars do not add up into one price: what a mile is worth to you decides which costs less. Price against availability, program by program, is in cheap programs against available programs.

What about British Airways Club?
British Airways Club quotes no cash amount in the data we read, so its cash is not in this ranking. British Airways does add carrier-imposed charges on its own long-haul flights, so check the total at checkout. What its seats cost in Avios is in how many Avios for business class.
Questions.
- Which program has the lowest taxes on business-class awards?
- It cannot be ranked exactly: most programs' figures are minimums. The lowest quoted median in the October 2026 study was at least $58, with LifeMiles. Only Thai Royal Orchid Plus ($127), where it quotes one, gives the complete amount.
- Does MilesZone show the cash before I book?
- Yes, where the program quotes it: each result shows the cash beside the miles, marked "at least" when the figure may be incomplete. The amount you pay is the one the program shows at checkout.
