Check award availability before transferring points

Check award availability before transferring points by finding the same flight, date, cabin and number of seats on the program's own site minutes before you move them. Transfers from bank and card points are usually one way, and in the October 2026 study the 6 programs had a business seat on between 17% and 85% of dates.

Why check award availability before transferring points?

Because the points cannot come back. Once Amex, Chase or another bank scheme moves points into an airline program, they generally stay there, so a seat that disappears mid-transfer leaves you with a balance you may never use. Seats do disappear: across the October 2026 study, LifeMiles had a business seat on 17% of dates and even Air France-KLM Flying Blue, the most available, on 85%.

What is phantom award space, and how do you spot it?

Phantom award space is a seat that shows in a search but cannot be booked when you try. It happens when one system lags another: a partner's display still shows a seat the operating airline has withdrawn, or the seat sold minutes after it was read. You spot it the same way every time, by finding the seat on the site of the program you will book with, for the exact flight and the number of travellers, before any points move.

What does "Checked" mean on a MilesZone result?

It is the time the seat was last read from the program. Busy routes are read again within a day or so, the quietest about once a week, and a route with an alert is read on the most frequent schedule its program runs. A seat checked yesterday is a good lead, not a promise. Details are on how it works.

Pro's live re-check asks the program again about one seat before you move points, and an alert re-checks the exact seat seconds before its email leaves.

How do you check award seat availability step by step?

  1. Write the result down exactly: program, operating airline, flight number if shown, date, cabin, miles and cash.
  2. Look at when it was checked. A check from this morning and one from last week are different evidence.
  3. Open the program's own award search, signed in, and find the same flight in the same cabin.
  4. Search for the number of travellers you are booking. One open seat does not mean two.
  5. Go as far as the payment page to read the cash. Programs can recalculate taxes and charges when you book.
  6. Check your card or bank scheme transfers to that program and at what ratio, then move only what you need.
  7. Book as soon as the points land, without waiting for the next morning.

Does transferring Avios points work the same way?

Mostly. Avios move between British Airways Club, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Qatar Airways Privilege Club, and each of those programs prices its own seats. Check the seat in the program that sells it before you move Avios across to it. What a British Airways Club business seat took in Avios is in how many Avios for business class.

What if the seat goes while the points are in transit?

Transfers can land in seconds or take a few days, depending on the bank and the program, so plan for the slow case. If the seat has gone when the points arrive:

  • Search the days either side. A program that had a seat on your date often has one close by.
  • Look for the same airline through another program you can reach. Two programs can sell the same flight at different prices.
  • Search the route again across every program, as in award flight search.
  • Set an alert on the route if you have Pro, so a returning seat is re-checked and emailed to you.

What can still differ when you book?

  • Cash is a floor for most programs: Atmos Rewards warns its price can be recalculated at checkout, Flying Blue says its search price leaves out airport and security taxes, and for LifeMiles and Virgin Atlantic MilesZone has not confirmed the figure is the whole amount. Only Thai Royal Orchid Plus quotes a complete figure, where it quotes one: it quoted no cash on 4 of the 26 routes where it meets the sample floor. Read the other programs' taxes as at least this much.
  • One passenger: two or more travellers need that many seats on the same flight, which can be unavailable on a date where one seat is open.
  • The program sets the price at the moment you book, under its own rules.

The whole sequence, from the first search to the confirmation email, is in how to book award flights.

Questions.

Can I move points back if the seat disappears?
Usually not: once points reach an airline program they generally stay there. Check your card program's terms before you transfer.
Should I transfer points before I find a seat?
Rarely. Points left in a bank or card scheme can still go to any of its partners; once moved, they can only buy what that one program sells.
Does MilesZone hold the seat while I transfer?
No. MilesZone does not book or hold seats. You book on the program's own site at its price at that moment.
