## Which US city is best for award flights to Europe?

Judged on how often a business seat was open, the best US departure cities were Atlanta (ATL) and Houston (IAH), each with a seat on 359 of 360 route-days (>99%). At the other end, Miami (MIA) had a seat on 76% of its route-days. Open is not the same as cheap: the price side, city by city, is in [cheapest business class flights to Europe](https://miles.zone/guides/cheapest-business-class-routes-to-europe).

"Route-days with a seat" counts every date read on every route from that city, and asks whether at least one program had a business seat that day. 12 US airports had 5 or more routes to Europe in the sample.

Each direction is counted on its own, since the seats out and back are different flights. Over every route, 86% of route-days towards Europe and 86% towards the Americas had a seat in the October 2026 study. The prices from these cities are ranked in [cheapest business class flights from Europe to the US](https://miles.zone/guides/cheapest-business-class-routes-europe-to-us); the least open European city here was Madrid (MAD), at 46%.

## How should you use award availability from your city?

1. Find your city in the table and look at the program column. That program is the one most likely to have a seat on your date.
2. Check you can pay in it. A high share from a program you hold no points in, and cannot transfer to, does not help you. [Atmos vs Flying Blue vs Avios vs Virgin vs LifeMiles](https://miles.zone/guides/atmos-vs-flying-blue-vs-ba-vs-virgin-vs-lifemiles) compares the programs that sell these routes, side by side.
3. If your city sits low, look at the nearest city above it. A domestic flight to a roomier gateway can turn a scarce route into an easy one, at the cost of a second ticket.
4. Search the exact dates. A city's share is spread over 60 days of departures, and your two dates can be the empty ones.

## What could make a city look roomier than it is?

- The sample keeps only routes with at least one business seat in the window, so every share is over routes that had something.
- Routes people search or watch are read most often and the quietest about once a week, so some cities have fewer dates read.
- A seat is counted for one adult. Two travellers need two seats on the same flight.
- One open program is enough for a date to count, even if it is a program you cannot use.

> **How the study counts** A typical price is the median of the cheapest business-class seat on each departure date, one way, for one adult, for departures from October 5, 2026 to December 3, 2026, read from September 25, 2026 to October 5, 2026. A date counts as read when MilesZone held a current seat on the route in any cabin, and every route in the sample had at least one business seat. Each program prices in its own miles or points, which are not worth the same. Method, limits and data: [the study](https://miles.zone/research/business-class-award-prices-2026-10).

## Questions

### Is a city with more space a better place to start?

Only if the program with the space is one you can use and its price suits you. The tables name that program for each city.

### Does a smaller airport ever beat a hub?

It can. The ranking is by share of dates with a seat, not by size, and only airports with 5 or more routes in the sample appear, so check the routes from your own airport in a search before driving to a hub.
